MP3 Kings of Convenience - "I'd Rather Dance With You"
I'm so damn unoriginal. It's a good thing there's all these mp3 blogs out there to introduce me to new music, and of course the cream always rises to the top. So it should be little surprise that it was the outstanding Said The Gramophone that first introduced me to Norwegian mellow popsters Kings of Convenience early this past summer, just a couple months before the essential Fluxblog actually went ahead & posted this track.

Kings of Conevience is made up of Eirik Glambek Boe & Erlend Øye, who garnered attention earlier in the year when Pitchfork included his excellent DJ Kicks mix compilation in their running best new music feature. But I really got hooked on this track back in September, after I became enamored with its amusing MOV music video (17.4mb, via Video-C).

One of the more upbeat (and few danceable) songs on the duo's third LP, Riot on an Empty Street, "I'd Rather Dance With You" exhibits much of the humor & skewed charm that makes Kings of Convenience so pleasant & likeable. Øye has spends so much time digging through records old & new, he doesn't have time to keep current on books & movies, nor does he want to make small talk in the club. He just wants to bust a move.

There's a Norde-obsessed art student out there with way too much time on his hands.

Track 01: The Arcade Fire - "Wake Up"
Track 02: Frou Frou - "Let Go"
Track 03: The Walkmen - "The Rat"
Track 04: Interpol - "C'mere"
Track 05: Franz Ferdinand - "Jacqueline"
Track 06: The Killers - "Somebody Told Me"
Track 07: Junior Boys - "Bellona"

I was up (not so) bright & early yesterday morning to listen to Air America's Morning Sedition's broadcast from Boston, which was a decent way to wake up. Hosts Marc Maron & Mark Riley had Ted Leo on for the show's final half hour, which included a short interview & three songs from Ted, including an appropriate-yet-oddball cover of Rush's "The Spirit of Radio". I attempted to wiretap the segment, but it sounded like junk. Luckily, the audio archives over at Air America Place saved the day, so have a listen (in 32kbps):

MP3 Morning Sedition - Ted Leo interview
MP3 Ted Leo - "Me & Mia" 12.10.04
MP3 Ted Leo - "The Spirit of Radio" 12.10.04
MP3 Ted Leo - "Timorous Me" 12.10.04

Lastly, I dropped by the local multiplex yesterday to catch director Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Twelve on its opening nite. The film has received lukewarm critical response thus far, and while it may not be as solid a film as the original re-make, it's still a lot of fun & I liked it a lot.

Stylistically, Soderbergh returns to his indie roots, eschewing the Vegas cool of Eleven (until the very end) & making a more rambunctious, all-over-the-place film that resembles its European locations. Despite its eye-popping movie stars & celebrity in-jokes (including a great return cameo by Topher Grace, helped by a trailer for the "Dennis Quaid movie" that preceded the movie), Twelve felt like a foreign film to me, & that's a compliment.

"I'd Rather Dance With You" has a good shot at my top song of the year and it would have a good shot at video of the year if not for the spectacular M83 video for "America".

It was through Big Ticket that I first came across (or re-came across) Kings of Convenience. I'd heard a bit a few years ago and didn't dig it, but based on the high praise from this site, I watched the video and promptly ordered the CD. It's really a great album, definite top 5 material for me.

Great choice.
